From Pottery to Sculpture

As I searched for new forms, a natural progression led me to deconstruct the vessel shapes of traditional pottery. The process started as a way to go beyond the basic form of a bowl and to break down its underlying structure by adding geometric elements. This took my ceramic work to a new and exciting place. Gradually it became clear to me that I would have to abandon the idea of the vessel altogether, if I wanted to continue creating sculptural pieces.

It was at this point that I faced the dilemma of either learning to use new sculptural materials and techniques, or to adapt my familiar ceramic methods to the challenges of this new sculptural direction. I chose the latter.
